Wanderers and Wonderers

What I Read (and Am Re-Reading), and More

Bali (1998-23 June 2013)

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. — I try to study for my bibliographic exam despite the help of Bali, who had other ideas on how I should spend my time.

MECHANICSVILLE, Va.—The list of references below formed the basis of one of two literature reviews I conducted in the Spring of 2013 for my dissertation prospectus. My dissertation committee member Dr. Elizabeth Hodges guided me in the development, reading, and preliminary analysis of environmental and exploration narratives on the list.

The list spans a millennium, from the Saga of Eric the Red at the end of the 10th century through Mike Tidwell’s 21st century depiction of the Louisiana’s endangered coast in Bayou Farewell. Types of narratives included first-person accounts of expeditions, personal meditations on humanity’s relationship with nature, and scientific and journalistic investigations of environmental issues. Geographically, the narratives chosen spanned the globe from the pole to pole, in environments ranging from deserts to tropical forests to the deepest parts of the ocean.

While one goal was to study the development and diversity of storytelling techniques among all these narratives, I am also using these texts as models of one of the central concepts of my dissertation, that the environmental scientist or writer is as much a participant in nature as he or she is an observer of it.

———

The list below is evolving from its original conception as a guide for a literature review for my dissertation prospectus in that I have chosen to add relevant readings that I already know of or that I may learn of over time. No readings from the original list have been removed, but alternate editions/versions may be substituted from what I originally read.

To make it easier for readers to follow the changes, I use the following typological conventions:

Red, strikethrough type like this indicates an an original edition/version on the list that has been substituted with another edition/version. [The reference to the new edition/version will appear in normal type in brackets.]

Bold red type like this indicates a substitute edition/version of an original reading.

Bold blue type like this indicates a reading added to the list.
